My Jams

My dear friend Greg sends mix CDs to some of his friends (and luckily, I’m one of them) at pretty regular intervals. When I last saw him, I told him I wanted him to start a blog and call it “This is My Jam.” Apparently, someone had already had the same thought. Oh well. Anyhow, I like these songs–my jams, if you will–and these bands. Maybe you will, too. xo

“Maria’s Beautiful Mess” by Ellis Paul–As of this moment, I’ve seen him live 50 times. My favorite.

“The Blower’s Daughter” by Damien Rice-To date, his show with The Frames opening in 2004 at the State Theatre in Portland, Maine is the best show I’ve ever seen in my whole life.

“When Your Mind’s Made Up” by The Swell Season

“Poison & Wine” by The Civil Wars-I finally got to see them live opening for Adele in May of 2011. I met them after the show and was so effusive about my feelings for their music that they asked if we could have a group hug. No joke.

“1957” by Milo Greene-I first saw them open for The Civil Wars in November 2011 and they were magical.

“What Can I Say” by Brandi Carlile–I first saw her open for Ray LaMontagne on December 3, 2005. She is magic.

“Anchored In You” by Shawn Mullins–Souls Core is my desert island disc.

I am OBSESSED with The Lone Bellow. I’ve been listening to them on repeat for many months now. “Bleeding Out.”

Imagine Dragons’ “It’s Time”. I start many a Monday morning with this version of this song. I like Imagine Dragons’ live KEXP version a lot, too.

“We Are The Tide” by Blind Pilot is one of my favorite songs of 2012. It just feels good.

“Rain” by Maine native Patty Griffin has to be one of the most heart wrenching songs of all time.

“Down in the Valley” by The Head and the Heart

“Wish You Well” by Katie Herzig–this song always makes me cry.

“Cough Syrup” by Young the Giant

“Wait So Long” by Trampled by Turtles–I first saw them in Skagway, Alaska in 2010. They are so fun.

“Change the Sheets” by Kathleen Edwards

“We Are Young” by fun. featuring Janelle Monae–I loved this song first.

“Shake It Out” by Florence + The Machine-Amen, Flo!

“Clementine” by Sarah Jaffe

“Pictures” by Benjamin Francis Leftwich

“Only Love” by Ben Howard

“Sewee Sewee” by Mountain Man

“Even in the Dark” by Company of Thieves

“Beautiful You” by The Walla Recovery

“Prodigal Daughter” by Pearl and the Beard

“Dead & Born & Grow” by The Staves

“Lonely Fortunes” by Ha Ha Tonka

“You” by Keaton Henson is haunting. His voice is lovely.

“Little Numbers” by BOY

Just saw Lake Street Dive in Northanpton Mass. on 11/30. Incredible. That about summed it up for me. At age 56 I’ve red-discovered my love of music thanks to these guys. By the way have you heard the new Lone Bellow song “Then Came the Morning?” It’s wonderful!

    • Hi, Paul! So glad your love of music has reawakened! Lake Street Dive live could definitely do that to someone! I am LOVING “Then Came the Morning”! The Lone Bellow will be touring in a couple of months and I really, really hope you make it out to see them in person!

My current is The Mike + Ruthy Band. Their entire Bright as you Can album is wonderful, but my jam is Golden Eye, with the baddest banjo riff ever. The tune is ever so catchy and there are so many layers to it. Makes me happy!
